Robert Thoms currently serves as City Councilman for Tacoma’s District 2, including all of Northeast and Downtown Tacoma, and a great slice of the North End.
MOST QUALIFIED …TO SERVE TACOMA
As a Navy Commander, a small business owner, and policy leader with over 20 years of experience at the state and federal levels, Robert’s life has been about service to country and community – on the issues important to us. Robert offers the experience and energy District 2 needs as we face unprecedented challenges and opportunities.
Since his election to the City Council, Robert has been a strong leader on our issues. He was the first member of City Council to oppose the Methanol Plant at the Port of Tacoma. Robert believes that the economic future of Tacoma should be sustainable and safe for our neighborhood. That’s why he drove a comprehensive sub-area planning process to craft the future of the Port and our industrial lands.
ALREADY ON THE JOB …TO PROTECT QUALITY OF LIFE
Safe, livable neighborhoods are the City’s most important responsibility. Robert has worked to make our streets safer. His work helped secure the first increase in funding for Fire and Police staff in over a decade. Robert has secured $5 million in funding for crosswalks, school zones, and other neighborhood safety improvements. His “Walk the Talk” program is helping to ensure our children have safe routes to schools.
There is more work to be done. The City recently declared a state of emergency on homelessness. Tacoma faces the task of addressing the complicated, interconnected issues of property crime, addiction, and mental health. Robert helped create the Property Crime Task Force to ensure our first response resources are used effectively. He has also secured more resources for our first responders to make Tacoma safer and protect those in need.
A PROVEN LEADER …TO REVITALIZE TACOMA
Robert is working with business and neighborhood groups to stand up for Tacoma. Robert’s work to create a Tacoma Transportation Master Plan will ensure Tacoma has control over its transportation future. Robert has also worked with local small businesses to cut red tape, helping to open more restaurants and local retailers. He even developed Tacoma’s first sidewalk café ordinance. From the big things to the small, Robert has the reputation as an effective partner in City Hall for revitalizing our neighborhoods.
Tacoma faces big decisions in coming years. From the University of Washington to the Stadium District and beyond, Tacoma is growing and adding new businesses. It’s crucial that we continue the revitalization process and ensure our growth is targeted and thoughtful. We need experienced, effective leaders in this time of change.
Robert Thoms is working every day for a better Tacoma.
